The prime minister's stepdaughter has stripped off for a men's magazine, saying it was an "Australian thing to do".

Staci Child, the heavily-tattooed daughter of Julia Gillard's partner Tim Mathieson, posed in a series of provocative shots for Zoo Weekly and said Australia's first female prime minister would approve.

"I think Julia will think it's a very Australian thing to do," Child told Zoo.

"I don't know if she'd pose for Zoo Weekly, but if she did, she'd look very beautiful."

However Child is obviously unaware of Gillard's dislike for tattoos on young women, an opinion which was made public in comments to the Daily Telegraph in February.

The profile also said Gillard had contempt for what it described as the relentless spread of scantily clad women in the media.

Child, who is based in New York, flew out for the shoot last week and poses with an Australian flag, a ballot box and even gets dressed up as a politician.

She showed her father the photos after the shoot and said he "loved" them.

Child said Prime Minister Gillard was "lovely", but she disagreed with her stance on gay marriage.

"I think it should definitely be legal," Child said.

Child is a stylist and has worked with stars such as Lady Gaga and Paula Abdul.

She is Mathieson’s child from a relationship he had in his late teens and was raised in Shepparton, in rural Victoria, before she moved to America.

The prime minister could not be reached for comment.
