A woman who stabbed a fellow university student in a frenzied campus attack has been jailed for eight years.

Science student Sarah Cheney, 25, twice stabbed Jemma Clancy in the back in the toilets of the La Trobe University library in May 2007.

Ms Clancy suffered a lacerated spleen and punctured lung.

Cheney pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder.

Sentencing Cheney, formerly of Melbourne suburb of Bundoora, Justice Betty King on Wednesday described the attack as savage.

"This was without a doubt a totally terrifying ordeal for the victim," Justice King said.

"This action was really random, absolutely out of the norm of behaviour for members of our community."

Cheney must serve four-and-a-half years before being eligible for parole.
