The number of students being suspended from NSW schools is rising sharply, with almost 400 being suspended for turning up with weapons including firearms and knives last year.

Data obtained by News Limited indicates that 14,405 students, ranging from those in kindergarten to Year 12, were suspended in 2008.

Do you think our schools are becoming more violent? Have your say below.

Of those, 6,500 students were suspended for physical violence including assaults or bullying, a 20 per cent increase on 2005 figures.

Another 970 students were suspended for serious criminal behaviour, up by 45 per cent since 2005.

The number of suspensions given for "use or possession" of a gun, knife, or other prohibited weapon rose 17 per cent from 339 in 2005 to 398 last year.

A breakdown of ages shows the vast majority of misbehaving students were aged between 12 and 16.

Are our schools becoming more dangerous?

Students are only bringing guns and knives to school because their friends made them or they just wanted to prove to people that they are cool because remember how your kids were when they were in primary but when they went to high school they changed. they got new friends and their friends changed them. Students these days are changing because they want to be par of a group and if they have some one helping them, then they will keep on going. i guess you can say that it is the parents fault but its not all parents. Its just the teenagers dont listen to their parents and do what they think is right. they dont listen to any1.try talking to the kids more and spending more time with them and telling them that u love them because then they will know that some one loves them. if students get suspended or expelled it doesnt change anything except the school they go to. They wil do whatever they did in that school to another school.
i also think that suspension is just handed out at the drop of the hat and there should be more investigation into an incident before a suspension is handed out.
It is so unfortunate that Austarlia is following more and more in the footsteps of America. the reality is te only way we can change these things is to change the system in which we live in, for that is what we must blame. One thing I do not agree with is the bringing back of the cane as Kenny suggested, for violence will only lead to more violence. Children, teenagers and in fact everyone needs to be raised on love for with love you learn respect and everything else will fall into place after we have learnt to love each other. If we are ever to fix the world we live in, we are going to have to do it through love. You would think that after all these years of war and hate that people would understand that love is the only way to move forward but mankind seems to be slow to catch onto the most obvious things. I may be only 17 yrs old but any uncorrupted child would tell you this if you listened to them.
well its not fair at all no matter who the hell abused our schools system what is wrong brining the good old cane back and the detentoin hey my mom and dad copped it so was i beware of your mom and dad and your school teacher those where the day fear of those words home work must be handed in in day if not we stop after school and do your school there util its done well in our day displen has no use kids are out off control my 7 year i am very scared of him if i miss treat him or even up set him why the law wont allow anyparents or teachers to displen kids so no matter what we say or do for our kids its like blowing in the wind no matter how we look at it no displen at school or at home we did get displen at school and at home by using the cane and detentoin also at home with a teather belt the fear was great then..
im in highschool and i dont think that our schools are violent at all yea there are a few fights every year but geez i wouldnt call our schools violent.
I agree with Undecided. Bring back the cane for boys and the teacher should be able to give unruly girls a smack with a ruler on the open palm of the hand. It never did our generation any harm and we knew what the boundaries were. Nowadays bullies can do what they like and get away with it because he had a difficult childhood, and the victim lives in fear. Parents can't give their kids a hiding for misbehaving and no amount of talking will deter a child, only the thought of a bit of pain will. I don't advocate beating, but a good sharp slap on the backside can work miracles with some kids.
Although this reply probably won't escape the censorship, the problems in schools are predominantly ethnic ones. Unless you can afford to send your child to a private school or happen to live in one of the few dwindling 'whiter' suburbs still left, then they may have to live with bullying or subject themselves to a gang-style mentality. I was in that position myself only 2 years ago. But this is the multiculturalism that you have been bullied into defending. Did you expect something different?
My son 15 will no longer attend high school as he was so scared of actully being phyically hurt by bullies the year above him.I think it is more brutal now and kids don't know when to stop...My Daughter 12 was punched in the face by a girl she didn't even know at her new school, the student was expelled but why are children feeling like they have to hurt children.
I believe schools are becoming more violent. I am a year nine student in Canberra and I have witnessed shocking events in my former school and my present school. I find that most teachers cannot handle such behaviour and walk out of the classroom, therefore, the particular students are in control of the situation and believe that they can take this to their advantage and behave like this more freaquently.
I think it would be unfair to blame the more student violence soley on the parents alone. I think teachers are less strict these days and dont really care, especially if you live in a housing commission and are attending schools there. Most kids just dont care and the schools cant really do anything about it, because the law protects minors.
