A malnourished dog has had its tail slammed in the door of a vehicle and been dragged 30 metres down a street when its owner drove off.
Police say neighbours heard the dog yelping about 2.45pm (AEST) on Sunday in McBurney Drive, Mascot, during the incident.
Witnesses allege the dog's 64-year-old owner dragged the animal along with its tail stuck in the side door of his Toyota Lite-Ace van.
When police arrived at the house, they found the malnourished dog had been grazed on its mouth, face, hind legs and tail.
The dog also appeared to be underweight, with its ribs easily visible.
Officers seized the animal from its owner and transferred the pet to RSPCA, where it will be examined by a veterinarian.
Police will await the report from the vet before taking any action against its owner.
