Police are scouring Sydney waterways for a pistol used in the shooting of Hells Angels member Peter Zervas, with six additional suspects being investigated in the alleged shooting conspiracy.

Gangs Squad Commander Superintendent Steve French said StrikeForce Mezen began searching on Thursday morning for a 9mm Luger at Salt Pan Creek in south-western suburb of Revesby after fresh information from 'various sources'.

"We have received information that the weapon used to shoot Peter Zervas was discarded in a waterway near to where the shooting occurred," Supt French told reporters on Thursday.

Police hoped to match the gun to the cartridges used in the shooting, he said.

"Sadly we haven't found the weapon but the search will continue in other waterways nearby."

Police are also questioning residents in Fairmont St, Lakemba, after receiving new information that a stolen green Holden Commodore was seen undertaking surveillance in the weeks before the shooting.

"Police allege the car was used as part of the operation mounted by (the) Comanchero (bikie gang) to attack Peter Zervas," Supt French said, adding that the car was one of 12 stolen from McGrath Holden in February 2009 for criminal activities.

"It was located on 13 June (this year) in Bexley," Supt French said.

"It was understood on one occasion the occupants left the vehicle running and ran out of petrol and had to get to a nearby petrol station to get fuel."

Police are investigating more than six Comanchero gang members who are believed to have been involved in the shooting and surveillance.

"The surveillance team was to call the shooting team upon sighting Mr Zervas," Supt French said.

Police believe orders for the shooting 'came from the top' because it involved a hit on a senior member of another bikie gang.

"This act would have been ordered by the highest levels of the Comanchero," Supt French said.

"Those used to commit the act are the junior members - they are simple pawns for those senior members."

Peter Zervas was shot more than six times while getting out of his car in front of his Lakemba home in southwest Sydney on March 29, 2009, but survived the attack.

Christopher Fong, 26, and Richard Fong, 30, were charged on Monday with conspiracy to murder Mr Zervas.

Thy were refused bail and remanded to reappear at Central Local Court via videolink on November 23.
