A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder and attempted murder over the stabbing death of a man and the serious wounding of a woman.
The 47-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were repeatedly stabbed at their home in Stockinbingal, near Cootamundra in southwestern NSW, about 5am (AEST) on Monday.
Police say the boy is known to the couple but is not a relative.
In addition to the murder and attempted murder charges, NSW police have also charged the youth with aggravated break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence and common assault.
Earlier, local area commander Superintendent Dean Smith would not comment on reports the teenager was the boyfriend of the couple's daughter.
"All we can say at this point in time is that the 16-year-old is known to the family," Supt Smith told AAP.
The couple's daughter and a young child were reportedly also in the home when the stabbings took place.
"We believe there were a number of other people in the house, however, until witness statements are confirmed and taken we can't confirm the number or the age at this point in time," Supt Smith said.
Police and ambulance crews found the man dead in the Wood Street home and the woman in a serious condition.
She was taken to Cootamundra Hospital and underwent surgery.
A NSW Ambulance Service spokesman said both victims suffered multiple stab wounds.
Supt Smith said the boy was located a short time later at his home in nearby Bethungra.
He was not injured, but was taken to hospital for observation and then released into police custody.
The youth has been remanded in custody to appear at Wagga Wagga Childrens Court on Tuesday.
