Dame Joan Sutherland will live forever in the recordings of her extraordinary voice, former Sydney Opera House CEO Norman Gillespie says.
Dame Joan, who has died at her home in Switzerland, was "one of the great operatic icons of the 20th century", Mr Gillespie said on Tuesday.
"It's there in the recordings. We're so fortunate she made so many, all from Handel up to the romantics in Donizetti and Bellini. She will live on forever," he told ABC Radio.
Asked what made Dame Joan's voice so special, he said, "Extraordinary range, dazzling range, extraordinary accuracy, extraordinary power. There really only was one voice like that, it was the great voice of the century."
Dame Joan had been a great ambassador for Australia, loved and celebrated all around the world, he added.
