Two teenage girls have been forced to leave a prestigious Sydney girls' school over cyber bullying allegations involving explicit messages.

The girls, from Ascham School at Edgecliff in Sydney's east, allegedly published rumours about students' sexual activity and drug and alcohol use on the MySpace social networking website.

The four-page posting described dozens of Year 9 Ascham girls, ABC television reports.

The girls' names and in many instances those of their alleged sexual partners were listed.

The father of one girl said he was horrified upon learning his daughter and her friends had been named.

"The 30 or 40 who were mentioned were all in a sort of group," he said.

The father, who was not named, said the rumours had also been emailed to students at other schools.

"She was approached when she was in Bondi Junction last week, she was approached by all sorts, from boys' schools to everywhere else and at a party she went to last Saturday night, everybody's aware of it," he said.

The entry was taken down on Thursday, April 30, after at least four days.

The school, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious, did not act until the next day, the Lateline program said.

Ascham issued a statement to the ABC which said: "We were shocked and deeply concerned about this incident and acted as swiftly as we became aware of it last Friday (May 1).

"Once the full nature of the incident became clear the school concluded the girls' continued attendance at Ascham was not possible.

"The parents withdrew them from the school."

ABC said the school wrote to parents warning them about the misuse of mobile phones and social networking websites. Ascham also offered counselling to the girls named in the posting.
