Two children set their kitchen on fire this morning as they were treating their mother to breakfast in bed.

But the Mother's Day gesture went horribly wrong, with their father suffering second-degree burns while trying to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters arrived at the Lower Templestowe, Victoria house around 8.15am and extinguished the fire, which caused an estimated $15,000 damage.

Templestowe fire station officer Rod Lawler said the mother heard commotion coming from the kitchen but dismissed it as her daughters bickering.

"Instead they were yelling 'fire!'," he was quoted as saying in the Herald Sun.

"It is a timely reminder to make sure all [smoke] alarms are working."

The girls were treated for smoke inhalation.
