People aged under 30 years may be banned from using solariums in NSW because of cancer fears, under a plan announced by the state government yesterday.
The International Agency for Research in Cancer recently deemed tanning beds to be a grade one carcinogen, the same ranking as smoking, the Daily Telegraph reports.
NSW Cancer Minister Frank Sartor said solarium owners should prepare for a drop in business as the risks involved with the tanning process become more apparent.
"I think the writing is on the wall, eventually probably solariums nationwide will be banned," he said.
The proposal would stop people under 25 using the beds from April next year, and people under 30 banned from August.
Current regulations prohibit children under 18 years from using tanning beds, as well as people with Skin Photo Type 2, which burns easily.
