A Sydney teen who was badly injured in monster surf yesterday has told of the crushing wave that tossed him onto razor-sharp rocks.

Cam McClintock and his friends were "chain surfing" — hanging on to a chain around North Curl Curl beach's ocean pool while waves washed over them — when the wave struck.

Cam was hurled 20m and knocked unconscious on sharp rocks.

"Unfortunately in the end there was a big rogue wave and we just didn't see it," Cam told Nine News.

Passer-by Nick Read saw Cam on the rocks and dived into the icy water to save him, but said he wasn't a hero.

"I think I just did what any decent passer-by would have done," Mr Read said.

But Cam credited Mr Read with saving his life.

"If it wasn't for him, I might not be here," he said.

A helicopter winched Cam to safety and took him to hospital for treatment of head injuries.

Witnesses described seeing blood on the teen's face and through a rip in his wetsuit.

Cam's mother said she was furious that he had ventured into the risky surf.

But the teen said he would be back in the water as soon as next week.
