Treasurer Wayne Swan has made his traditional call for ideas from the community ahead of his 2011/12 May budget.

For his 2010/11 budget, the treasurer received around 200 submissions from a broad range of individuals and groups.

"These provided a real insight into the challenges faced across our nation, and opportunities for the government to improve the well-being of all Australians," Mr Swan said in a statement on Thursday.

"Community views are a central consideration to the government in framing its policies, which is why I encourage people to have their say by submitting ideas."

Interested parties should lodge their submission by January 28, 2011.

He said submissions should be mindful of the government's strong commitment to offsetting new spending with savings, maintaining the discipline that will return the budget to surplus in 2012/13.

The treasurer will hand down the 2011/12 budget on May 10.
