How did the family of ducks get to the other side of the road? With a VicRoads escort — or so it was on Melbourne's Monash Freeway this morning.

Traffic was disrupted for up to 45 minutes after a mother duck and her five ducklings were found waddling on the four-lane freeway southeast of the city.

The left-hand city-bound lane was closed and the speed limit cut to 60km/h after a worried driver spotted the ducks near Malvern East train station just after 8am, a VicRoads spokesperson said to The Age.

An incident van from the traffic authority arrived on the scene and shadowed the feathered family in the left-hand lane as they made their way toward the city.

The van was forced to change lanes suddenly when the ducklings appeared to take fright and began moving towards the centre of the freeway.
