A "white supremacist" has been permitted to own a handgun despite strong objections from police, the Firearms Registry and a psychiatrist's clinical assessment.

Darryl Potts, who has been ruled a possible risk to public safety by a psychiatrist, had his firearms and pistol licences revoked by police after he displayed "white supremacy views" to officers during a domestic violence dispute in 2009.

But the Administrative Decisions Tribunal has ruled Mr Potts is not mentally impaired and is therefore entitled to a firearm licence despite his extremist views, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Mr Potts told the tribunal he did not believe six million Jews were killed in the holocaust and that Jews were planning to weaken other races by encouraging mixed-race children.

He believes he had unwittingly played into their hands by having children with his Korean wife, from whom he is now separated.

Mr Potts is an elevator technician at federal parliament and pursued the case because he believed a revoked licence could affect his ability to retain a job at a government building.
