Federal MP Rob Oakeshott has thrown his support behind three fellow independents standing in safe National Party seats at the NSW state election.
The electorates of Upper Hunter, Myall Lakes and Oxley have all been held comfortably by the Nationals for decades.
But with NSW going to the polls on March 26, Mr Oakeshott - a former National turned independent - has started lobbying on behalf of a trio of similarly non-party aligned politicians.
Tim Duddy will stand in the seat of Upper Hunter, which takes in Dungog, Stroud and Gloucester, Steve Atkins is running in the Taree and Forster-Tuncurry electorate of Myall Lakes, while Richard McGovern is a candidate in Oxley on the mid-north coast near Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour.
"For a long period ... the National Party has been the only option at the ballot box and people are now wanting more," Mr Oakeshott said on Saturday.
"All three independent candidates stand on their own records and their own polices, are running their own strategies, are funded through their own means and are standing for no reason other than wanting a better place."
