A Melbourne childcare worker has received compensation after she was fired for "backbiting".

Tara Davies, who was sacked from Hippity Hop Childcare centre in Packenham last June, allegedly said one of her co-workers was lazy and another was not competent, The Age reports.

The centre has a "no backbiting" policy which warns that any staff member caught speaking badly about another behind their back may be fired.

A principal of the centre, Michelle Smith, confronted Ms Davies and reminded her about the policy.

The policy states that backbiting "can lead to the breakdown of unity between staff within the centre, making it an unpleasant place to work". Ms Smith told the Fair Work Australia court that three other staff had been fired for backbiting and the policy would be enforced again.

But Fair Work Australia commissioned John Ryan said the centre's backbiting policy was an "extremely blunt instrument" and did not clearly explain what backbiting was.

Mr Davies was awarded $9480 in compensation.
