A fine and brave South Australian has been lost with the death of Sapper Jamie Ronald Larcombe in Afghanistan, the SA government says.

Sapper Jamie Ronald Larcombe and an Afghan interpreter were shot dead by insurgents while on patrol in the Mirabad Valley on Saturday night (AEDT).

South Australian Minister for Veterans Affairs Tom Kenyon extended his condolences to the family of the 21-year-old South Australian, the 23rd digger killed in Afghanistan since 2002.

"The loss of any Australian soldier in the field is a tragedy for us all," Mr Kenyon said in a statement.

"This incident again highlights the dangers faced by our soldiers on active duty in areas of conflict overseas.

"We've lost a fine and brave young South Australian."
