The 18-year-old woman at the centre of an ADF sex scandal says she has become the victim a hate campaign after going public with claims she was filmed having sex with another student.

The Australian Defence Force Academy cadet, who is known as "Kate", says she was unknowingly broadcast on Skype having consensual sex with another first-year army cadet.

The encounter was watched by at least six other cadets, she said.

She has since told friends she is now being verbally abused with taunts of "slut" from fellow students, the Herald Sun reports.

The door to her room at the academy has also been defaced and she has been targeted by people angry she broke the written code forbidding unauthorised contact with the media.

It was reported yesterday she had been asked to apologise to fellow cadets for going public.

After raising the matter with the ADFA Commandant, navy officer Commodore Bruce Kafer, "Kate" feared it would be covered up, so she approached the media.

It is believed he did not offer her counselling or any support when they first met, the paper reported.

"Kate" could face censure for breaking the no-media rule and for breaching academy's strict no-fraternising policy, but Defence Minister Stephen Smith yesterday defended her right to speak out.

"I don't believe the young woman concerned should be viewed poorly or dimly as a result of bringing this matter to public attention," Mr Smith said.

He added the allegations were very serious and, if proved, were a gross betrayal of trust by the male cadets.

Opposition defence spokesman David Johnston said any disciplinary action against the woman for fraternisation or speaking out would be ludicrous.

"To bring her into the spotlight as the subject of disciplinary proceedings is just completely wrong," he said.
