Sydneysiders are set to be slugged by a 17 per cent rise in their electricity bills under the latest round of price increases.

The rise to be announced on Thursday will add $230 to the average annual city household power bill, according to News Ltd reports.

Country folk will also cop a 20 per cent rise in electricity bills, adding $325 to an average annual bill, under recommendations due to be announced by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).

Both rises will be effective from July 1.

The larger than expected rises are being blamed on costs associated with energy firms complying with the federal government's Renewable Energy Target (RET).

The RET requires energy firms to source power from renewable sources such as solar or wind.

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell described the planned price rises as "another massive hike".

"We will also be seeking answers from IPART on whether there is any way to reduce these increases," he told News Ltd.
