Shark victim 'teased animal' before attack

A 17-year-old boy who was bitten by a shark had been teasing the animal with a piece of fish before the attack in WA.

The boy was flown to Perth after he was bitten on the heel while cleaning fish at Red Bluff, 140kms north of Carnarvon, about 9pm (WST) on Saturday.

The manager of a nearby campsite Bec Caldwell said the teenager was using a piece of fish to entice the shark to swim towards him, ABC News reports.

"It was pretty silly, really, that people were feeding sharks while there was other kids around," she said.

Ms Caldwell said he was bitten after being knocked down by a wave.

The Royal flying Doctors service said the boy would be transferred to Perth on Sunday afternoon after spending the night in the town's hospital.
