Prime Minister Julia Gillard says the federal government is concerned about problem gambling and will act after reviewing the findings of a new parliamentary report.

"There is a parliamentary committee report that's been released today and obviously the government will analyse it and respond to it in due course," she told reporters in Adelaide on Friday.

"I'm personally concerned about problem gambling. I don't want to see a situation where people end up not being able to fund the necessities of life ... because they put more money on poker machines than their family budget can bear."

The report said it was possible to adopt new technology - known as a mandatory pre-commitment system - by 2014 to limit the amount of money a gambler can put through pokies.

Ms Gillard said the government will closely analyse the findings and recommendations of the report.

"We understand that we need to act. That is why we asked the productivity commission to provide a report on the best steps forward," she said.

"Now we have a parliamentary committee that has also worked in the area and we will have a good look at its recommendations.

"The government has been concerned with problem gambling for a long period of time."
