Fashion retailer General Pants has been forced to tone down a raunchy advertising campaign after a backlash from shoppers.

Teenage staff have been wearing "I love Sex" badges and stores featured mannequins naked from the waist up as part of the campaign for Sydney-based denim designers Ksubi.

Employees told the Sunday Telegraph that wearing the badges was "demeaning" and sent "the wrong message to our customers, who are generally young teenagers".

Staff said they were also fielding complaints from shocked shoppers and parents.

Minister for Women Pru Goward also weighed in, saying General Pants had "clearly overstepped the mark".

The campaign included posters of a semi-naked woman with gaffer tape on her breasts and a man unzipping her jeans.

General Pants has since covered the posters with a black "censored" strip and dressed the mannequins with tops.

But posters with the word "Sex" and the "I love Sex" badges have remained in the campaign, which ends on May 16, the Telegraph reports.

General Pants chief executive Craig King reportedly said the campaign would not appeal to everyone and that it was a "bit of a stretch" to suggest it might encourage teens to have sex.
