The one-man protest caused chaos in the city early this morning as police were forced to close the vital arterial to all traffic and public transport.

Known as "Mick", the man called a number of media outlets during his bridge-top protest to voice his concerns.

"Kids that come from broken families, there's no help for them," he told TODAY co-host Karl Stefanovic.

"If I stuff four million people around for one morning and that gets my kids and other kids help one day sooner, I have achieved my goal.

"If that draws attention to the fact that DOCS is a failed department that is letting our children down, than I've achieved my goal."

He spoke of parent alienation syndrome and said the consequences of his actions were "irrelevant".

He also told Stefanovic he hoped his protest would draw attention to the "systematic failures" in our government.

"Mick" unfurled two pink and white banners reading, "plz help my kids" and "kids first".

"I've been pushed and pushed and pushed," he told Triple M radio.

"I'm not just doing this for me, I'm doing this for my kids."

The man said he had equipment which could endanger commuters and left a note with his truck to close the bridge.

NSW Transport advised commuters to delay their departure from home or expect major delays.

Sydney Ferries continued to operate, and commuters could use train and bus tickets to travel for free on ferries.

Motorists were advised to use the Harbour Tunnel and Victoria Road as alternative routes, although they are expected to be very heavily congested.
