Hungry Jack's Ultimate Double Whopper has been revealed as the worst fast food choice in Australia, in an investigation that has put the country's takeaway choices under the microscope.

The research conducted by consumer watchdog Choice has found the monster burger contains 80g of fat and 5000 kilojoules, and takes about one-and-a-half hours of jogging to burn off.

Health-conscious consumers would be better off choosing Red Rooster’s Free Range Garden salad, which was revealed as the healthiest fast food option with only 479Kj.

The investigation sampled menus from Hungry Jacks, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Subway, Red Rooster and Oporto.

Hungry Jack's was found to have the first and second worst menu items in Australia, with its Angry Angus (double) burger coming in at number two, with 52.1g of fat and 3276 kilojoules.

Domino's and Pizza Hut are neck and neck with their high fat options, according to the research.

Two slices of Domino's Meatball and Rasher Bacon Edge pizza or Pizza Hut's Deep Pan BBQ Meat Lovers pizza contain more than 2000 kilojoules, or one quarter of an adult’s recommended daily intake.

Choice is pushing for all key fast food outlets in Australia to be forced to declare kilojoules on their menus by February 2012, in a bid to fight the country’s growing obesity epidemic.

"Let's face it, not many of us go to a fast food outlet for a salad," Choice spokeswoman Ingrid Just said.

"When you add chips and a soft drink to something like the Ultimate Double Whopper, you're consuming a day's worth of kilojoules in one meal. It's a safe bet not many of us would realise that."
