High-speed rail should be embraced: Bligh

A very fast train connecting Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne would be welcome, as long as other projects aren't forgotten, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says.

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese is due to release the first stage of a $20 million study into building an east coast high-speed train network later on Thursday.

It's believed the train network could cost as much as $100 billion.

A three-hour trip from Brisbane to Sydney could cost as little as $75.

Ms Bligh said it would be an asset to the nation, but the federal government should not forget other projects.

"I think a very fast train that's affordable for passengers would be a great nation-building project," she told ABC Radio on Thursday.

"There are of course other priority projects that we would also be wanting to see in any consideration by the federal government of any application of funds.

"There are the sort of projects that the 21st century needs to be embracing."
