Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says critics of coal seam gas (CSG) are using misleading reports to suggest the fuel is dirtier than it is.

Ms Bligh's comments came after the Australian Greens this week questioned whether CSG was actually any cleaner than burning coal due to the leakage of methane during the extraction process.

She said the science has been in for decades.

"The CSIRO, which I think is one of the most well-respected science organisations on the planet, considered this issue in 1995 and I think put beyond any doubt that the emissions from coal seam gas are considerably less - between 50 and 70 per cent - than coal-fired generation," Ms Bligh told reporters in Canberra after Friday's Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting.

Ms Bligh said there were "numerous" other reports that backed up the CSIRO study.

On the other hand, reports relied on by the critics of CSG were actually about extracting gas from shale, the Queensland premier said.

"That's not what is happening in Queensland and nor am I aware of it happening anywhere else in Australia," she said.
