Bones found in Beerwah bushland last week are those of missing Queensland teenager Daniel Morcombe, DNA testing has confirmed.

Queensland Police confirmed the test results in a press conference today.

Daniel's parents, Bruce and Denise, released a statement regarding the breakthrough.

"Today’s news is extremely sad for us all and although we knew in our heart that the search area was Daniel’s final resting place the scientific confirmation is still enormously difficult to comprehend," the statement read.

"For seven years and nine months it is that expected shock we have all been waiting for."

The family will not front the media today but plan to tomorrow.

Perth man Brett Peter Cowan, 41, remains in custody charged with the murder of Daniel, who was 13-years-old when he was last seen in 2003.

Cowan has also been charged with deprivation of liberty, child stealing, indecent treatment of a child under 16 and interfering with a corpse.

Police are still waiting to receive DNA results on two shoes found recently at the Beerwah search site.
