JB HiFi has scrapped the sale of CD singles in another grim sign that the once-popular music format is on its last legs.
The chain store made the decision because of a rapid decline in singles sales, with No. 1 singles often selling less than 300 copies over one week, the Herald Sun reports.
Australia's singles charts are now compiled using lists that show how many times tracks have been purchased online.
This week's No. 1 single — I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas — is only available as a digital download and not as a CD single. The track sold 13,235 copies online last week.
The group's Boom Boom Pow is also at No. 2 and although the song is available as a physical release, it only sold 300 copies last week compared to 9000 digital copies.
Some larger retail outlets like Kmart still sell CD singles as well as independent record stores.
