Clover Moore aims to remove cars from roads in the heart of Sydney's CBD in favour of cycling paths.

It's time to remove cars from central Sydney's "unpleasant" and "congested" roads, Lord Mayor Clover Moore says.

Ms Moore has again outlined her commitment to removing cars from roads in the heart of the CBD in favour of more public squares and cycling paths.

"It's a matter of planning for the future," she told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

"We have a million people in our local government area each day, half a million in the CBD.

"It is congested, it's unpleasant, and our plan is to address that in the medium to long term."

Ms Moore said that congestion currently cost the city $4 billion a year and this figure would double in the next ten years if no action was taken.

She said the City of Sydney and the NSW government were working together to achieve the outcomes of the Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan.

The Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan includes greater provisions for pedestrians and cyclists and an extensive light rail network.

The central idea of the plan was Danish architect Jan Gehl's vision of a pedestrian boulevard the whole length of George Street through the heart of the city.

"There certainly is a cooperative approach now," Ms Moore said.

"Our staff are working with Sydney Metro, and our staff are working with the staff of the planning department."

Ms Moore said Sustainable Sydney 2030 was the most visionary project for Sydney since Martin Place was reclaimed as a public space in 1971 and the Queen Victoria Building was refurbished in 1980.

"We have a long term plan for a hierarchy of roads so that on some streets you'd have vehicles and pedestrians and buses, on other streets you would have light rail and pedestrians," she said.
