Agriculture Minister Tony Burke will meet with US officials in Washington to discuss trade matters.

Australia's objection to a US decision to reintroduce dairy export subsidies will be high on Agriculture Minister Tony Burke's agenda when he visits Washington DC this week.

Mr Burke will meet with US officials in the US capital from July 6-8 to discuss trade market access, food security and climate change, including the recent passage of the US climate change bill through the House of Representatives.

He is also expected to discuss the US administration's views on farm policy and the 2008 US Farm Bill.

A statement from Mr Burke's office says that during the visit he will "personally lodge Australia's objection to the administration's decision to reintroduce dairy subsidies", which occurred in May following a similar decision by the European Union to reintroduce a subsidy for countries that export dairy products overseas.

Mr Burke will meet with US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, US Trade Representative Ron Kirk and other officials.

He'll be accompanied by representatives from Australia's agricultural industries, including Meat and Livestock Australia and Australian Dairy Farmers.

The US is Australia's third biggest agricultural market behind China and Japan, and was worth $2.5 billion in exports last year.
