Disgraced rugby league star Nate Myles says the bizarre incident in which he defecated in a hotel corridor was an accident.

The Sydney Rooster and Queensland State of Origin player said he was suffering a stomach bug at the time of the embarrassing incident and ended up in the corridor — rather than the toilet — after mistaking the door to his room for the toilet door, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Myles, 24, had been out with fellow Roosters players Mitchell Pearce, Willie Mason and Mark O'Meley at a junior league fundraiser in Terrigal and returned to the Crowne Plaza hotel about 4am.

"I had been asleep for about four hours and I got up to go to the toilet," Myles told the Telegraph.

"It was dark and I was a bit dazed — the door to the toilet was right next to the entry door and I went through the wrong one.

"The door shut behind me and I was stranded."

The Roosters forward said he was naked, had diarrhoea and could not get back into his room.

Instead he tried to gain entry into a nearby hotel room where a family was staying, but they refused to let him in.

"I just asked them if I could use their toilet," Myles told the Telegraph.

He was later found disorientated in the hotel's fire escape.

Myles, who has repeatedly apologised for the incident, offered to pay the hotel's cleaning bill, and has contacted other hotel guests to apologise.

He has been suspended for six weeks and fined $50,000 by the NRL, and will miss the third State of Origin game.
