Formaldehyde is one of two chemicals that have been found in water samples taken from a Kingaroy property.

The Department of Environment and Resource Management is investigating after formaldehyde and thiocyanate were detected in routine water sampling of landholders' properties in Kingaroy.

Environment Minister Vicky Darling says the two chemicals are common in a range of products including agricultural products and formaldehyde can also occur naturally.

She said the state government was taking the incident very seriously and hoped to find the source of the contaminants soon.

DERM officers will take more samples at the property this week and they will be analysed as a priority.

"It is also important to note this incident has no connection with coal seam gas or BTEX (benzene, toluene and xylene) chemical compounds," she said in a statement on Thursday.

"The water spring, where the contaminants have been detected, is used for livestock watering."

Biosecurity Queensland will advise on the impacts on livestock, Ms Darling said.
