Jetstar says it's disappointed check-in workers are taking industrial action on Friday in their "no weigh day".

The Australian Services Union (ASU) announced on Tuesday that the Qantas-owned carrier's check-in staff will waive excess baggage fees for 24 hours in protest at stalled workplace agreement negotiations.

"Jetstar is disappointed by this action and is continuing to focus on ongoing discussions with the ASU to finalise a fair and reasonable agreement for the benefit of its employees and sustainability of the business," a Jetstar statement said.

The action, dubbed "no weigh day", is the first industrial action Jetstar has faced in its eight year history, the ASU says.

It will affect passengers at airports in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns and the Gold Coast and cost the airline an estimated $50,000 in lost fees.

Jetstar said it has been negotiating with the ASU for the past 12 months to finalise an enterprise bargaining agreement covering around 400 employees at seven Australian ports.

The ASU said industrial action was a last resort.

"The decision to take industrial action was a last resort but management has left their workers with no other option," ASU assistant national secretary Linda White said in a statement.

Some passengers immediately took to social networking site Twitter to welcome the decision.

"Jetstar won't charge excess baggage fees this Friday ... Time to take Aunty Gloria in Adelaide that Banana Tree Pot Plant I got her," one person wrote.

Excess baggage fees will be waived between 3.30am (AEDT) on Friday and 3.30am on Saturday.

It comes as Qantas faces its own industrial relations problems.

The airline's ground staff, engineers and pilots have all carried out recent industrial action.
