A Greens advertisement hitting out at coal seam gas mining is about to air on Queensland regional TV.

The party launched the advertisement in Brisbane on Thursday, saying it's time to protect farmland and water from coal seam gas mining.

It said the CSG industry is planning to drill up to 40,000 wells in Queensland by 2030, taking a minimum of one hectare each of prime agriculture land.

Greens Party leader Bob Brown said that with the population having trebled sincehe was born, food security needs to be a priority.

"That means empowering farmers to keep their fences up and keep their gates secure if they don't want their land compromised by some get-rich-quick coal seam gas operation that is going to compromise the land and then leave in a few decades time," Senator Brown told reporters in Brisbane.

He said the ad would be aired on regional television in the coming weeks, and asked for more financial backing to step up the campaign.

The Greens launched its nine-point policy plan on the gas and coal industries on Saturday, including giving landholders greater compensation rights and the right to deny access to their land.

The party also wants a moratorium on further development until the social and environmental impacts of CSG mining are known.
