Queensland's first police chopper has arrived on the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast City Council, police and state government have funded a $1.6 million six-month trial of the helicopter.

The Bell Long Ranger operated by successful tenderer, the Perth-based Heliwest, will fly 20 hours each week on jobs decided by police based on intelligence information.

Queensland premier Anna Bligh said the state government would assess its effectiveness after six months.

"This is an interesting opportunity for us to assess if this is the best way to enhance policing," she told reporters in Brisbane.

"If this police helicopter makes a big difference we'll be looking to make it a permanent part of policing, but none of us will know until we see it out there on the beat ... and in the sky."

The chopper service was announced after a spate of armed robberies and three fatal shootings in two months, including the slaying of detective Damian Leeding in May.
