A NSW Labor senator wants to scrap the "archaic" Queen's Birthday public holiday and replace it with a new modern holiday.

Senator Matt Thistlethwaite plans to launch a campaign to reignite debate about Australia becoming a republic, the Daily Telegraph reports.

He will propose his plan to get rid of the long weekend holiday, which falls on the second Monday of June, to the NSW Young Labor conference today.

"While it was once a quaint notion to celebrate the birth of the monarch, to modern-day Australians it has no significance, it is completely outdated," Mr Thistlethwaite said.

A state-wide survey will be conducted to find out if there is community support for the idea and to seek suggestions for a date and name for a new, more significant holiday.
