A 17-year-old girl killed in a high-speed car chase on Sunday morning was pleading to get out of the car moments before it veered off the highway, slammed into a culvert and rolled several times.

Kyralee Clark, from the Murray River town of Albury in NSW, was a passenger in the Holden Astra with her 18-year-old aunt, Jessica Kidd, and a 21-year-old man who she did not know, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"Kyra was crying and begging him to stop," said Ms Kidd, who owned the car.

"She was saying 'pull over' and he wouldn't pull over."

Ms Kidd said Kyralee had only got into the car because she trusted her judgement about the man.

Friends who gathered at the scene of the crash said Kyralee, who had recently started a new job at KFC, had sent a desperate Facebook message in the minutes before the crash.

At least three police cars from both Victoria and NSW were chasing the car as it crossed the border into Victoria on the Hume Freeway, travelling at 180km/h.

It is believed the car was still travelling at that speed when it crashed and rolled.

Kyralee's mother, Jodie Brunton, said people should learn from her daughter's death but doubted anyone would take it seriously.

"It's always the same message and it's not getting through," she said.

The driver suffered head and abdominal injuries and remains in a stable condition at the Alfred Hospital.

An 18-year-old girl was treated at Albury Hospital with abdominal injuries. Ms Kidd was not seriously hurt.

Victoria Police know the driver but remain unsure as to why he was running from police.

Inspector Dave Ryan said the driver's actions were "absolutely ridiculous" and confirmed he turned off the vehicle's lights to try and escape the police pursuit.
