A 25-year-old Victorian policeman is facing charges of trafficking ecstasy, cocaine and ketamine.

Matthew Holmes, of South Yarra, appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday for a preliminary hearing.

He is one of two Victorian policemen charged with drug-related offences following a nine-month investigation by the Ethical Standards Department.

Holmes is facing 12 charges including three of trafficking a drug of dependence, three of attempting to possess a drug of dependence and three of using a drug of dependence.

He is also charged with three counts of conspiring with another person to traffic a drug of dependence.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Prahran, in inner Melbourne, between April and July this year and involve the drugs cocaine, ecstasy and ketamine.

The court heard it would take some time for prosecutors to sift through recorded phone conversations that may form part of their case.

In a subsequent investigation, a 38-year-old sergeant was charged with two counts of trafficking a drug of dependence and possessing a drug of dependence.

He was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.

Holmes was bailed to re-appear in court in December.

A third man is facing similar charges.
