An anti-coal seam gas activist who tried to block the construction of a pipeline has been fined $2000.

Conservationist Drew Hutton was arrested in March after joining a blockade against the construction of a CSG pipeline on Queensland's Western Downs.

Hutton, the president of the Lock the Gate Alliance, appeared in the Dalby Magistrates Court charged under Section 804 of the Petroleum and Gas Act with obstructing a CSG company without reasonable excuse.

The section guarantees mining and gas companies access to private land and the offence carries a potential $50,000 fine.

The protest was at the Tara Estate, south of Chinchilla.

The magistrate found Mr Hutton guilty and fined him $2000, but no conviction was recorded.

Hutton said he was considering an appeal.

"I've just got to figure out the cost of that and how worthwhile it will be in terms of our campaign," he told AAP.

He said the judgment would not affect his campaign to encourage farmers to shut out gas companies.

"We'll just continue doing what we've been doing," he said.

"If we find it appropriate we'll certainly be continuing to call on landowners to lock the gate."
