New search powers for Victorian principals

Victorian government school principals will have the power to search students for weapons next year.

The law is part of a raft of new rules to come into effect on January 1.

Principals, assistant principals and authorised teachers will be able to search students for knives and other weapons while they are on school grounds or under their supervision.

They will be able to seize any weapons found.

From New Year's Day, suspended sentences for crimes such as recklessly causing serious injury, commercial drug trafficking, aggravated burglary and arson will be abolished.

It will also be illegal to sell or display bongs in Victoria.

The Port of Hastings Development Authority will come into being, separating Hastings from the Port of Melbourne.
