Royalty will visit country Victoria to open an exhibition honouring actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly.

Princess Charlene of Monaco will cut the ribbon on the Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery in March next year.

Princess Charlene, a former South African Olympic swimmer, married Kelly's son, Prince Albert II of Monaco in July this year.

Gallery director Karen Quinlan said the royal visit would be a spectacular event for the central Victorian city.

"It's going to be an incredible opportunity for north central Victoria. The gallery is going to shine and the city is going to shine," she said.

The 100-odd items featured in the exhibition include Kelly's wedding gown, the dress she wore to collect her Academy Award, the award itself and a collection of her jewellery and accessories.

"The exhibition highlights her life as a princess, her life as an actress and her life as an ordinary person," Ms Quinlan said.

"Her great beauty, her iconic beauty really comes through - it's as close as you'll get to Grace Kelly."

Prince Albert will not accompany his wife to Bendigo but instead attend the World Water Council meeting in Marseille.

Andrew Cannon, the Honorary Consul to Monaco, said Princess Charlene's visit highlighted the importance of the exhibition to the royal family.

"The family have a great love of this country. Indeed it was after the death of Princess Grace that the family received more letters of condolence from Australia than any other country."

The exhibition has previously been showcased in London and Toronto.
