Fifty-three New Zealand Fur Seals have washed up dead along a section of South Australia's Eyre Peninsula coastline.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said 51 of the seals were juveniles and two were considered young adults.

They washed up on Sunday along six kilometres of coastline in the Wanna Beach area of the Lincoln National Park.

A department spokesman said what caused the deaths was unclear and post mortems would be conducted on Tuesday on three of the seals.

New Zealand fur seals are found along Australia's south coast and along the coast of New Zealand's south island.

A protected species, they can grow to weigh up to 250kg but males usually average about 125kg.

They are generally considered docile but will attack if provoked.
