Nearly 3000 people in NSW will celebrate Australia Day in the most patriotic fashion - by becoming Aussie citizens.

There will be 95 citizenship ceremonies held across the state on Thursday, with people from 101 countries signing up to become citizens of Australia, according to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

The largest ceremony will take place at Blacktown in Sydney's west with 155 people taking part, while other big ceremonies will be held at Parramatta, Auburn, Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai and Strathfield.

In regional NSW, ceremonies will take place in Coffs Harbour, Tweed Heads, Newcastle, Wollongong and Lake Macquarie.

In regional towns including Warren, Dungog and Gunnedah, citizenship ceremonies will be held for just one person.

More than four million people have become Australian citizens since the first ceremony in 1949, with more than one million joining in the last decade.

"Becoming a citizen shows a commitment and loyalty to this country and the desire to share a common future," DIAC said in a statement.
