A growing number of Queensland children are drowning in bathtubs with a record five deaths last year.

Since 2004, 15 bathtub drownings have been recorded, with 13 involving babies and children up to four years old, the Children and Young People and Child Guardian and Kidsafe Queensland Commission said.

Commissioner Elizabeth Fraser said the most common risk factor for bathtub drownings was inadequate supervision.

"Parents and caregivers should always be within arms' reach of children when giving them a bath, no matter how shallow the water may be," Ms Fraser said.

"In six cases, the children were co-bathing with a sibling at the time, with five of the six siblings aged under four years."

Kidsafe Queensland chief executive Susan Teerds said leaving a child unattended in the bath not only risked a child drowning but also put them in danger of burns.

"Hot water scalds are a common reason for children to be admitted to hospital and can leave life-long scars," she said.
