Thousands of potentially deadly Sanyo microwaves are being urgently recalled across Australia because of a risk of electrocution.

NSW Fair Trading on Friday urged anyone who has bought a Sanyo convection grill microwave oven (model number: EM-C8787B) to stop using it immediately.

"The microwave oven has been recalled due to the risk of severe electric shock when anyone is operating the buttons on the control panel while any other part of their body is in contact with an earth, such as a kitchen sink," Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said in a statement.

A spokeswoman confirmed the electric shock could prove lethal, particularly for elderly people or those wearing a pacemaker.

About 7800 of the ovens have been sold nationally in Target stores between July 2010 and the first half of January.

Affected customers are advised to call Sanyo toll free on 1800 063 747 to arrange a refund.

The company has started withdrawing all products from the market.

When checking the model number, customers are advised to ensure the oven is switched off and unplugged.
