A woman has died and four others, including three children, have been taken to hospital after a crash west of Melbourne.

Police said the accident happened after the driver of a Mitsubishi Pajero four-wheel drive appeared to lose control and hit a tree on Bacchus Marsh Road, Balliang, about 3.20pm (AEDT).

A passenger in the vehicle, a 53-year-old woman from Sydney, died at the scene.

The female driver was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Three children who were also in the vehicle were taken to hospital for observation.

The crash takes Victoria's road toll to 25 compared to 15 at this time last year.
