Red Mass to bless new judicial term

Judges and priests will don their robes at a centuries-old Mass to kick off Australia's new judicial term.

High Court justices, judges from the NSW courts, magistrates, barristers, lawyers and law students will attend the Red Mass in Sydney on Monday.

Archbishop of Sydney Cardinal George Pell will celebrate the Catholic Mass at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney's CBD at 9am (AEDT) to mark the opening the 2012 judicial term.

The Red Mass was first held in Sydney in 1931 but dates back to the 12th century, when it was celebrated by the papal courts of Avignon in France.

The Mass prays for divine guidance for those seeking or dispensing justice.

Those expected to attend include NSW Attorney-General Greg Smith, NSW Law Society president Stuart Westgarth, NSW Bar Association president Barnard Coles QC and legal academics.
