Prison escapee captured near Vic border

A prisoner who escaped from a NSW jail has been captured near the Victorian border, police say.

Convicted armed robber Mark Maukau, 23, absconded from a minimum security area of Goulburn Correctional Centre, in the Southern Highlands, on Friday afternoon.

He is believed to have used a screwdriver to steal a Mazda from an elderly couple, before heading south.

He was sighted near Bombala, in southwest NSW, just before 6pm (AEDT), sparking a police pursuit which ended in Delegate, near the Victorian border after he gave police the slip.

Maukau was captured on Saturday afternoon in the Delegate River area following a search, a police spokeswoman said.

No further information was immediately available.
