Police believe a homeless man found stabbed to death in St Kilda may have had an altercation with an associate.
The 31-year-old man was found dead on the footpath in Barkly Street just after 4am last Saturday.
He was last seen just before 3.30am, near the corner of Grey and Fitzroy Streets.
Homicide Squad detective inspector John Potter admitted police did not have many leads in the case and was calling for public assistance.
"We think that he might have met up with somebody he knew and something happened," detective inspector Potter said.
"We're particularly keen to talk to his associates or those that know him because they may be able to lead us to whoever is responsible for this."
The man, who police would only identify as David, had been arrested earlier in the day, he was then taken to hospital after becoming ill while in police custody.
After he was discharged from hospital, police drove him to St Kilda where they tried unsuccessfully to find him temporary accommodation.
Detective Inspector Potter said David was dropped off in St Kilda on his request.
Police have released a photo of David that was taken by police on the day of his arrest.
