Flood-hit communities in inland Queensland have been warned to prepare for severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and large hailstones.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning on Tuesday.

It says Roma, Charleville and Mitchell, which are mopping up after the floods, could be hit.

St George, which is still in the grip of a flood, is also in the firing line, along with Augathella.

Bureau forecaster Tony Auden said large hail was expected.

"But having said that, we can get the odd storm that decides to break the norm," he told AAP.

Mr Auden said the storms were unlikely to add too much to inland Queensland's flood disaster.

"There is potential to see small pockets of heavy rainfall later in the day but I must stress this is very different to the rain that's delivered the flooding," he said.

"If they get a storm directly overhead though, then obviously it's going to maybe give them a few local issues in terms of local flash flooding, but it should essentially be fairly short-lived."

Mr Auden said the storms would continue for the rest of Tuesday, before moving east of Roma on Wednesday and easing on Thursday.

"It is a fairly normal summertime pattern. Unfortunately it falls on top of this flooding event," he said.

"But by itself it shouldn't be a particularly large or significant event."

Emergency Management Queensland has advised residents in affected areas to move their cars under cover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items, seek shelter, avoid using telephones and beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
